KUEOFE was inspired by the life experience of Kalu Ugwa, who grew up in post-civil war Nigeria during the early 1970s. At the time, the devastation of the war left him with little hope of returning to school due to extreme poverty — support systems like KUEOFE were nonexistent. Through the kindness of individual benefactors, some of them complete strangers, he was able to pursue his education all the way to the doctoral level.
Today, Kalu and Ezinne Ogbureke, both Professors of Dentistry, are paying that generosity forward by supporting students whose futures could be transformed by access to higher education.
KUEOFE is rooted in the life and work of Kalu U. E. Ogbureke, whose career spans academic dentistry, translational cancer research, health law, public service, and global educational capacity building. His journey — from Nigeria to advanced study at the University of Ibadan, the University of Glasgow, Harvard University, and Suffolk University Law School — reflects what becomes possible when talent is met with opportunity.
Yet the deepest inspiration behind KUEOFE remains profoundly personal: his own education was made possible by people who believed in him when poverty could have ended his schooling. That experience now gives KUEOFE its moral purpose. The Foundation exists to identify promising students in Nigeria and help remove the financial barriers that prevent them from continuing beyond high school. Through scholarships, mentoring, and networks of support, KUEOFE seeks to transform generosity into opportunity — and opportunity into graduates who can serve their families, their communities, and society.
